Band Saw Sanding Belts

Sanding into square corners is often something of a challenge. Stationary disk sanders can easily sand flat faces, but struggle with taller vertical edges. Sanding drums handle tall faces and are excellent for curves but cannot reach into corners and can gouge into a flat face. Although these odd corners are typically cleaned up by hand using a sanding block or a detailer stick, replacing the band saw blade with a sanding belt can improve speed and quality when sanding into corners.

2Sand.com offers sanding belts specifically made to fit 93 and 80 inch bandsaw models, available in five grits from 80 to 220. They can be fitted to a bandsaw just like changing blades, and since the tension needed is far less, tracking sets very easily. Now you have a belt sander that can sand parts as tall as your bandsaw capacity.

There are a number of advantages to working this way:

  • Burning is reduced because the belt has time to cool as it travels around the wheels. The 1/2” wide belt allows for easily sanding outside and even shallow inside curves.

  • The belts can be used without a platen so it can sand right into corners, even those with acute angles. This is excellent for quickly cleaning up tenons and deep notches on all sorts of parts.

  • Cleaning and shaping small parts can be done more safely due to the relatively slow speed of the bandsaw and being able to adjust the exposed belt with the overhead guides.

  • The bandsaw table can be tilted to sand angled faces.

  • A backer can be set up behind the belt as a platen to ensure faces being sanded remain straight.

  • The 93 inch belts easily fit standard 14 inch bandsaw models, but 2Sand.com specializes in making custom belts, so we can certainly make up belts to fit whatever model bandsaw you'd like to fit them on. Check out the custom page on our website for details.

These belts are not for all applications - for example, they are generally not suited for larger parts or aggressive stock removal. However, we know they offer a unique solution to sanding issues for many of our customers, and we wanted to share this information with you.
