Removing old coatings prior to refinishing is a different process than preparing a new surface for finish. Leftover adhesives, paints and topcoats are rarely fully hard and will soften when being sanded. So, choosing the right sanding discs for your job is important.

Many surfaces being prepared will have glues, caulks, and other things in addition to paint that needs to be removed. All of these will clog the abrasive surface of the sanding disc fairly quickly, so it doesn’t make sense to use an expensive product, especially for the initial removal. But we all know that using cheap sandpaper often turns out to be the more expensive choice in terms of time and the final result.

Fortunately, Mirka has been working to fill this sanding need with their  Gold line of products. The Gold line uses aluminum oxide abrasive in a special stearate semi-open coating that resists clogging and helps prevent the forming of “pills”, the tiny bits of softened material that can roll up under the sanding disc. This coating means that the Gold discs continue to remove material longer under adverse conditions.

Mirka Gold is available from 2Sand.com in 5” and 6” Multifit hook and loop discs , or in a standard 5” diameter, 8-hole hook and loop disc . These discs are available from 80 up to 400 grit. The discs work well with factory sander pads and with our interface pads. Mirka Gold is also available in GoldFlex pads , 4-1/2” by 5”, 200 squares to a roll.
