Use Guide Coat to Attain a Flawless Finish

Anyone who has applied a finish to anything has uttered the phrase, “Uh-oh, missed a spot”, then had to start sanding all over again. Try as we may, scratches and blemishes can be very hard to spot. In the 2Sand Blog, we have talked about using low angle lighting to spot defects , and that technique works very well, but we have also found Eagle Kovax Dry Guide Coat helps find defects with a minimum of fuss and without special lighting.

Guide Coat is a very fine powder that comes packaged with an applicator pad. Applying the powder onto the sanded surface instantly shows scratches and other defects so they can be dealt with before applying finish. Available in black, white and orange, Guide Coat is able to contrast with virtually any background.

Best applied to already smooth surfaces, the applicator spreads a dusting to your part quickly and evenly, so you can instantly see where attention is needed. As the surface is sanded, the powder is removed with the surrounding material, but remains visible in the smallest recesses.

Even when using Abranet discs with dust extraction as we recommend, the powder stays visible until removed through sanding. The bright contrast of the Guide Coat clearly appears until the surface is smooth.

Automotive finishes, metal panels and fiberglass surfaces are all logical places to use Eagle Kovax Dry Guide Coat, but we have customers using it in woodshops as well. It is excellent for turnings or tabletops that demand a high gloss finish, and it is also used for surfacing CNC beds to show if any low spots are missed. Even hand-fitted tenons can be marked to ensure that material is shaved evenly across the entire face.

When your finish must be top notch, when you need to see exactly where stock is removed, using Eagle Kovax Dry Guide Coat as part of your finishing routine will guide you toward a flawless finish.
